Title : Analyzing veterinary medicine residues in food: A comprehensive guide

Abstract:

The use of pharmacological active compounds (antimicrobials, hormones, NSAIDs, tranquilizers) in food producing animals can pose significant health risks to humans. In a One Health perspective, the negative effects are also felt by animals and the complete ecosystem. Residues from these drugs can be found in food of animal origin such as meat, poultry, milk, dairy products, eggs, fish, seafood, and honey. One of the mostly known consequence is related with the use of antibiotics and the possibility of this situation can contribute to the development of antimicrobial resistant bacteria. To monitor the present of such residues it is mandatory to have suitable analytical methods which can be a challenging developing process. Despite the new detection technologies, that allows the detection of residues at low levels – high sensitivity and selectivity, the extraction approaches still need to be appropriately optimized to guarantee final confident results. The method validation, in accordance with the EU regulations, will then be a measurement tool of the efficiency of the developed methods.
